Data-Linc introduced the serial and I/O PlantLinc Family, developed for short-range in-plant to medium-range installations, in direct response to customer requests for a modem that could replace less reliable technologies with the same robust FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) data transfer method as our premium SRM Family, but at a lower, short-range-competitive price. The PlantLinc Family’s “PLR” modems now offer the same key CIX features– protocol to I/O and I/O to I/O– in the 900 MHz license-free band for data transfer up to 5 miles* (8 km) with line-of-sight in high RFI/EMI and crowded band environments, such as areas of existing wireless infrastructure, with confidence in unsurpassed data communication integrity.

The PLR6430 is a FHSS radio with connections for discrete and analog inputs and outputs. The user can either use these devices for I/O to I/O data exchange (mirroring) by using the PLR6430 radios for the entire network, or use the alternative option of an I/O to protocol solution implemented by using the PLR6430 I/O units at the remote sites and Data-Linc’s unique PLR6435 protocol to I/O Master, a companion radio with serial and Ethernet ports.

One great advantage of using radios with connections for I/O devices is simplicity. Whenever remote intelligence is not required, the radios are a straight-forward way to interconnect devices not sharing the same communication protocol or that do not have a communication port.

An I/O to I/O solution is a network where the signals at a main location would be shared wirelessly with up to another eight remote locations, all using the PLR6430.

When using the I/O to Protocol system network, all the I/O points at the Remote PLR6430s are accessible via the Ethernet port of the PLR6435 master unit through Ethernet/IP or Modbus TCP/IP, or via the serial port using DF1 or Modbus RTU communication protocols. This solution increases the capacity of the wireless network by supporting up to 384 I/O points, spread over a maximum of 16 remote locations. The options are user selectable via the included configuration software, which also allows the user to define the desired state for the discrete outputs in case of a communication failure. These competitively priced I/O solutions provide the additional advantage of compatibility with the corresponding versions of the long-range radios to support hybrid CIX/PLR and SRM/PLR applications, offering maximum flexibility in network design both inside and outside the plant.

*Greater range in optimal conditions with clear line-of-sight, Repeaters and/or higher gain antennas.
