Examples of Private/Dedicated FSK Wire Modem Applications

Heavy Industry— Chemical Manufacturer

In a major chemicals manufacturer, three Modicon 984's are connected via Data-Linc MDL500 remote modems to an MDL500 Master which is connected to a Honeywell HPM. The communications is RS-232 Modbus RTU, operating at 9600 baud with the data superimposed on instrumentation cable.

Material Handling— Conveyer and Crane Control

Data communicates between PLC-5 Processors over a set of conductor rails as well as with a festoon system, using Data-Linc MDL500 Series FSK Wire modems. This system sends information to and from an AGV system.

Material Handling— Crane Control

Numerous companies are using Data-Linc LCM100s on power lines or MDL500s on dedicated tracks to control stacker cranes over sliding contacts, thereby eliminating the need for cable and reel or control pendant. Armstrong World Industries.

Metals/Mining/Quarrying— FMC/Sunnyside Mine/Conspec Controls

A number of companies with mining industry applications transmit data from underground sensors to monitoring equipment on surface at mine offices using Data-Linc MDL500s on unshielded spare pair (high EMI) in main shaft cable bundle.

Metals/Mining/Quarrying— Lonestar

Lonestar transmits data between weigh scales and central control building, using MDL500s with AE-485 interface (compatible with RS485), superimposed on in-place RS-422 wires, solving ground plane shift problem.

Municipal/Government— Water/Wastewater Treatment

SCADA application at a water/wastewater treatment facility on the Kingsbay Submarine Base in Georgia, utilizing a total of 52 Data-Linc LLM1000* Long Lines FSK (Frequency Shift Key) Modems for data communications on spare pair and twisted pair wires between seven GE Fanuc 90-30 Model 331Master CPUs and from four to eight 90-30 Model 311 Remote CPUs at each remote pump site. Data communications at the Remotes is by the SNP-X port. A data acquisition software package is installed at the Master locations with graphic displays interconnected via Ethernet by fiber optic modems. (*Please note that the LLM1100 has replaced the LLM1000.)

Light Industry— Tank Farm

A pair of MDL500 modems are already installed on an instrumentation cable in a tank farm to connect a small Modicon PLC to the Honeywell Advanced Process Manager (APM). The Modicon PLC is a 984-141 and the connection to the Honeywell is the serial interface card in the APM. The MDL500 should be equally compatible with Honeywell DHP, HPM and PLCG or EPLCG.

Oil and Gas/Petrochemical— BP Exploration/ARCO

Petroleum companies transmit data from Modicon PLCs at wellhead to control trailer using LCM100s with power line isolators and MDL500s over existing 277VAC lighting power lines and spare pair.

Oil and Gas/Petrochemical— pH Meter Control

Shell uses Data-Linc modems to transmit 4-20 mA from pH meter to control room on existing instrumentation lines, simultaneously, using A-A1000 Analog-Analog RTU Multiplexers and LLM1000 Long Lines Modems solving ground plane shift problem. (Please note that the LLM1100 has replaced the LLM1000, and the DDAA has replaced the A-A1000.)

Oil and Gas/Petrochemical— Well Heads

Full duplex 9600 baud data communications between Modicon Compact 984 PLCs at several well heads and the control trailer using Data-Linc MDL500, DOVE (Data Over Voice Encoder) and LCM100 Power Line Modems with PLI500 Power Line Isolators to transmit data over existing spare pair and superimposed on in-place 480 VAC wiring. The multi-drop connection between DOVEs and LCMs utilizes Data-Linc's AE485 Auto Enable technology (compatible with RS 485) to allow half duplex operation without the need for enable lines or signals.

Power/Utility— BPA Site

BPA monitors and transmits eight 0-5VDC signals from remote site over 3 miles to central station using A-A1000-8 analog transmitter and receiver with LLM1000 Leased Line Modems. (Please note that the LLM1100 has replaced the LLM1000, and the DDAA has replaced the A-A1000.)

Power/Utility— Contact Closure

Pacific Power transmits multiplexed contact closure and 4-20 mA data on spare pair in telephone cable using A-A1000 RTU Multiplexers and LLM1000 Long Lines Modems. (Please note that the LLM1100 has replaced the LLM1000, and the DDAA has replaced the A-A1000.)

Power/Utility— Pump Control

To multiplex and transmit 4-20 mA and contact closure data for pump control over 480VAC power lines, the plant is using D-D1000 RTU Multiplexer and LCM100-HV Line Carrier Modem. (Please note that the LLM1100 has replaced the LLM1000, and the DDAA has replaced the D-D1000.)

Traffic Control

The Washington State Department of Transportation has installed 40 Data-Linc LLM1000 Long Lines FSK Modems with Square D SY/MAX PLCs to extend their I/O distance capabilities. Many single outputs are multi-dropped several hundred feet apart to provide traffic control at electronic signs leading to a freeway tunnel. (Please note the LLM1100 has replaced the LLM1000.)

Water District

Data-Linc FSK Wire and Spread Spectrum Radio Modems were used in a Typical Water District Installation saving the company over $40,000. Read more...

Water Production Department

Monitoring and control of water tank well levels and pumps at remote locations around City of Enid, Oklahoma, is being accomplished using Data-Linc Group's 9600 baud MDL500 full duplex modems connected to Modicon PLCs over 7 mile range.
