Siemens Product Partner Program

As a Siemens Product Partner and the manufacturer of the broadest line of industrial grade modems in the world for wireless and fiber optic as well as wire data transmission, Data-Linc Group has focused its efforts toward insuring that the transmission of data between PLCs, RTUs, PCs and other automation equipment achieves the highest possible level of accuracy, reliability and integrity. Full connectivity, compatibility and interoperability with Siemens Automation Equipment ensures simple installation as well as insurance against potential operational problems. Serial data is typically transmitted by RS-232/422/485 cabling, using standard Siemens protocols. Modems (Ethernet radio modems are TCP/IP, 10Base-T) and cables are supplied pre-configured at the factory for trouble-free installation (no modem field settings, programming or connectivity problems with Siemens PLCs).

Principle Features and Benefits

  • Data-Linc Modems and connecting cables are factory configured for each application, assuring a trouble-free installation (no modem field settings, programming or adaptors required).
  • Data-Linc specializes in a complete line of Industrial Grade Modems, including license free spread spectrum radio, industrial dial-up/leased line, fiber optic and FSK wire modems.
  • Data rates to 115.2 Kbaud. Range capability to 25 miles, wireless or on any two conductor wire.
  • Data-Linc modems support point-to-point, multi-point and multi-tier/multi-drop applications.
  • Data-Linc employs only the most robust communications technologies to assure the ultimate in data reliability and integrity for industrial data acquisition, control and SCADA applications:
    • Frequency Shift Key (FSK) technology is immune to data transmission problems, providing the highest possible data reliability over any two conductor wire, shielded or unshielded, twisted or untwisted (No ground loop problems and immunity to EMI, noise and surge).
    • Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum wireless technology avoids data transmission problems.
  • Ability to transmit data across sliding contacts, slip rings, rolling wheels, brushes, shoes, etc.
  • Data-Linc modems support Siemens PLC Protocols.
  • The Data-Linc MDL500 Series of FSK modems can be used to superimpose data on in-plant wiring, including AC/DC power lines (up to 600 VDC), PBX telephone wires and instrument loop lines (without in any way interfering with the current, voice or instrumentation signals already being transmitted) thereby eliminating the time and expense of data cable installation.

Data-Linc utilizes the most advanced Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum technology supporting serial and Ethernet connectivity for wireless data transmission (no site license required) as well as specialized Frequency Shift Key (FSK) techniques for data communications on any two conductor wire. Data-Linc provides the ultimate in data reliability and integrity while also achieving superior performance, user friendly ease of installation and insurance against potential operational problems.

Typical Industry Application

TOSCO Oil Refinery
wireless serial modem SRM6000SCADA application at the Tosco Oil Refinery in Ferndale, Washington utilizing Data-Linc SRM6000 Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum Radio Modems (no site license required) to provide long range data transmission between the blend control room, utilizing a Siemens 545 Simatic Processor, and Siemens S-7 Micro Processors at multiple remote sites monitoring and controlling valve position and pump on/off status at the storage tanks. The TI545 was connected to the existing DCS, using MODBUS protocol, to provide control from console screens. Normally, this would have required wiring each device for multiple digital I/O points at a cost of $130,000. Instead, at each general grouping of tanks, a Data-Linc SRM6000 spread spectrum radio modem was connected to the Siemens S7-200 PLC, permitting direct connection to the pump and valve wiring, saving $90,000 while also preserving future expansion into areas previously uneconomical to reach.

The SINAUT Tele-Control System
Siemens endorses Data-Linc Radio Modems for wireless applications.
