Security Product and Modem Selection Matrix

There are a variety of network cameras on the market designed to meet the growing need for video security systems. For those applications requiring data transfer, Data-Linc Group has tested a number of cameras as well as video compression equipment connected via our modems. Video data can be transmitted up to 25 miles using simple omni directional antennas with direct line-of-sight, farther with high gain antennas or Repeaters.

Some security equipment manufacturers build network cameras that operate using web browsing software (no special additional software required). Utilizing Data-Linc's license-free wireless Ethernet modems for transferring video data, these webcams produce 1 to 2 frames per second depending upon the image size and resolution. Cost of these web security cameras is in the US $1000 price range. Some of these manufacturers also produces network video servers that have the same functionality as the video camera except that they use an external CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) camera.

Another option for security camera applications is Network DVR (Digital Video Recorders). This type of security video equipment that a number of companies produce have a network connection for remote viewing. These products require special software but are far more capable in high end security applications where recording and play back is required. They also offer 10 to 15 frames per second using Data-Linc's wireless Ethernet modems depending upon the image size and resolution. These high end video security devices start at US$4,000 which does not include the accessory equipment required to operate them (camera, programming tools, software, etc.).
