Oil and Gas Industry Applications

America's Largest SCADA Installation

Data-Linc Group's license-free, wireless Ethernet modem was the preferred data acquisition solution for a US-based Fortune 500 energy services firm. The Data-Linc Ethernet modem was specified to become an integral communications component of a new electronic flow meter monitoring network. This wireless IP network will extend throughout the contiguous United States and is the largest SCADA project to date in North America.

Brazil: Extensive oil and gas pipeline network monitored from one central location

Data-Linc and A-B Tech supplied the SRM serial radio modems for a robust, cost-effective solution that involves monitoring the integrity of the pipelines in São Paul State, and, within the foreseeable future, monitoring from one central location that encompasses the entire 3.3 million square miles of Brazil. By completion of the project, several thousand modems will be required for the nationwide system. (Read the article with diagrams.)

BP Exploration/ARCO

Petroleum companies transmit data from Modicon PLCs at wellhead to control trailer using LCM100s with power line isolators and MDL500s over existing 277VAC lighting power lines and spare pair.

Conoco

Four 4-20 mA signals communicate full duplex over 2000 feet in high EMI environment using FDM7000 Fiber Optic Modems and A-A1000 RTU Multiplexers. (Please note that the DDAA has replaced the A-A1000.)

Mobile Chemical

To communicate with temperature controllers on a rotating die from the factory floor computer, Mobile uses LCM100s over 240VAC lines supplying power to the rotating die through slip rings.

Oilgear Company

Data-Linc DLM4000 Industrial Dial-Up Modem transmits data between GE Fanuc 90-30 PLC Processors over 10 mile leased line.

PEMEX (Exploration and Production),
Universidad Autonóma de México and DEC Control

Four wireless Ethernet modems allow flexible monitoring of the emissions of SO2, HCT, NOX, CO and H2S to prevent or improve conditions effecting the environment and allow PEMEX to add future equipment to the existing network. All data can be viewed in the PEMEX network via a hub which is connected to the central office in Villahermosa, Tabasco. Various government organizations, such as SEDEZPA, PROFEPA, INE and others, are able to access and integrate their own equipment into the PEMEX network.

Shell Oil Company

Shell uses Data-Linc modems to:

    • Transmit pulse flow meter data from shore to totalizer on loading dock using DOVE/MDL Monitoring Data Link on existing telephone cable spare pair, solving wire degradation signal attenuation problem.
    • Transmit 4-20 mA from pH meter to control room on existing instrumentation lines, simultaneously, using A-A1000 Analog-Analog RTU Multiplexers and LLM1000 Long Lines Modems solving ground plane shift problem. (Please note that the LLM1100 has replaced the LLM1000, and the DDAA has replaced the A-A1000.)
    • Communicate polled data from heat trace system using DOVE/MDL Monitoring Data Link operating half duplex on telephone cable spare pair, avoiding compromised data due to ground loop problems.

Tosco Oil Refinery

A SCADA application utilizes Data-Linc license-free SRM6000 frequency hopping spread spectrum radio modems to transmit data between a Siemens Simatic 545 Master communicating with multiple S7-200 remote processors. (See diagram.)
