Serial Radio Modems Support Purdue University’s Solar Race Car

Purdue University Solar CarData-Linc Group’s SRM6000 radio modems continue to play an integral part in Purdue’s Solar Racing telemetry system. The role is to transfer important vehicle information from a micro-controller based data acquisition system that is part of the solar car, to a personal computer in a chase or lead vehicle. It is then analyzed in real time and is essential in formulating and updating race strategy and ensuring that the strategy is followed. The data sent by the telemetry is: battery current, array current, battery pack voltage, individual battery temperatures, and vehicle speed. The strategy followed by the Purdue Solar Racing Team is formulated to minimize the time taken to complete the race.

The adjustable power is important to us because it is desirable to keep energy usage of peripherals at a minimum. The adjustable energy output allows us to set the power usage by the radio modem to the minimum level that is detectable by the receiving end. For accurate race strategy, data loss needs to be kept to a minimum. Because of this, the large range of these modems allows the data to be accurately received by the personal computer in the chase vehicle over greater distances. Finally, dependable components on any vehicle are a necessity. The modems were put to the test on the 2003 American Solar Challenge in which Purdue Solar Racing participated. Over 2,300 miles of harsh roads were put on the car using the SRM6000 modems. A solid telemetry link with the car was ALWAYS made.

America's Cup

Two recent Americas Cup sailboat competitions, won by New Zealand, used the Data-Linc SRM6000 radio modems to transmit critical boat parameters from the yachts.

Hydroplane Races

The Pico American Dream and Budweiser hydroplanes took first and second place in the national ranking of hydroplane racing in 1996. Both racing teams selected use Data-Linc SRM6000 radio modems to transmit data to the pits from their boats, measuring engine performance and other critical parameters during operation of the hydroplane in trial runs and under high speed racing conditions. The vibration environment over water at speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour is particularly severe and on windy days the damage done to cockpit instruments and other on-board equipment is significant. During initial evaluation of the SRM6000 radio modems, considerable concern was expressed as to the viability of these units when subjected to vibration levels capable of shattering instruments designed to withstand such conditions. The Data-Linc radio modems have proven themselves and none have failed in spite of encountering the very high levels of vibration and humidity. Read the complete article.

Sports Arena Scrolling Signs

A Seattle integrator used multiple Data-Linc SRM6000 spread spectrum wireless modems to control and operate unique scrolling signs for sports arena advertisements. The Data-Linc SRM6000 radio modem allows the operator to use his touch screen operator interface to control and program the scrolling of the signs from anywhere in the arena or stadium. This wireless communication solution eliminates the hours of wiring and debugging that the former system required. See the complete article.
